Plan A Road Trip: renting a car for a road trip
Can you rent a car for a road trip? Why, of course! And in some cases, it may be a better deal all around when compared to taking your own vehicle.
Plan A Road Trip – Round Trip Or One-Way Options
One advantage of renting a vehicle for your road trip is the flexibility of options. Most car rental companies will allow you to rent a car for a one-way trip.
This kind of flexibility would allow you to drive across the country – for example – and then fly, or take a train, back home. Or, drive down some beautiful roads and then take a ferry or even a cruise ship home.
Obviously this wouldn’t be possible if you were driving your own car. I mean, not without being faced with a huge hassle and expense of trying to get your car back home without you, which is a weird thing for drivers to do.
Plan A Road Trip – Options For Unlimited Miles
Most car rental companies have options for unlimited miles/kilometres. This is amazing for long, cross-country road trip, or any road trip. Compared to the wear and tear on your own vehicle, this may be just way more worth it.
In addition, avoiding extra miles on your own vehicle can help to maintain the value if you want to sell your car down the road. I mean, cars are for driving; but being smart with money is also good, especially nowadays.
Also, of course you need to consider whether your own vehicle is bought or leased. Leased vehicles I know, have restrictions on the amount of miles you can go per year.
The point of a road trip is to have fun and not worry about the real world. Having to worry about your miles on your road trip isn’t cool.
Plan A Road Trip – Think About Roadside Assistance and Insurance
Vehicle rental companies often provide options for roadside assistance, and insurance package options. This too, may be a better deal when compared to taking your own car, depending on your circumstances.
Plan A Road Trip With Small People
Taking small people with you? Enterprise is one company that offers car seats with your rental. So, no need to haul around an awkward car seat if you don’t really need to.
Renting a car for a road trip is also another way that you could save money on gas, especially if your own car is seen as a gas-guzzler. You could select a vehicle with better mileage, and more comfort and safety features.
Plan A Road Trip For A Really Long Test Drive?
Renting a car also gives you a unique opportunity to extensively test-drive a vehicle you may be planning to purchase at a later date.
Try to book your car well in advance (even 3 months ahead of time). This ensures you will have many options for different vehicles available.
Plan A Road Trip: road trip gas calculator
There are several great road trip gas calculators on the web. Some of the best are:
You can also create a road trip budget which will factor in gas, as well as food, camping/lodging, and activity fees.
How do you calculate gas for a road trip?
If you aren’t into fancy internet gas cost calculators, you can do the math yourself. It’s not too complicated.
To find your mileage for a road trip, start with the total distance of your road trip. Then, divide it by your miles per gallon. This will give you the number of gallons of gas you will need on your trip. After that, multiply that figure by the current price of gas. Whatever the result is the estimated cost of gas for your road trip.
google maps road trip planner
Yes, Google has a trip planner, too. And it might be one of the best. It’s great for visual learners.
This trip planner is great at organizing your inspiration and trip recommendations. You can lay out all of the different recommendations, and organize them by category. In addition, you will get to visualize how far apart they are from each other.
With the planner, you’ll be able to map out each day of the road trip. And, at the same time, you’ll be able to see the overall road trip on the same map. This way, you will never have an opportunity to forget about a stop that you want to make.
Other features of the Google Maps trip planner:
- Ability to color-code attractions, for example green for parks, blue for beaches.
- If you’re logged into your google account, you’ll be able to research your trip on your desktop computer, but when on your road trip, the same information will be on your phone.
- Groups or multiple people can add to the app where they’d like to go or what attractions they’d like to visit. This way, you can easily see on the Google Map where everything is in relation to each other. And, you’ll be able to tell what you have time for in a day.

It’s exciting that we are once again going to be allowed to take road trips. While being spontaneous can seem so fun, innocent, perhaps whimsical… sometimes it’s better to make a plan, especially when you’re traveling with children or other folks who aren’t the greatest company if they are tired, hot, and/or hungry.
It can feel nice to take a shower after a long drive and sleep somewhere warm and dry and safe. I imagine there will be some hotels that get fully booked since everyone may be traveling the country this summer and beyond. So in that case it may be wise to plan ahead so that your trip can go smoothly.
Even if you just plan a little bit, that will be enough to make for a more enjoyable journey. Have fun road tripping!
