Shell Road And 91 East-west Connector Right Turns

Shell Road, Richmond Train tracks and Right Turns at Red Lights

Question: Can I turn right on a red light at this intersection? It’s Shell Road and 91 East-West Connector?
Can I go through the first red light after I stop? And drive to the second white line/red light or do I have to stay stopped at the first line?

Answer: Let’s review the basics. You can go right on a red light, after you stop and make sure it’s safe, as long as there’s no turning restriction sign. Simple.

In this case, there is no sign restricting the turn. Therefore, you can turn right after you stop; if and when safe, of course.

The purpose of the two red lights is to give drivers sufficient warning. At higher speeds, drivers need enough time to stop their vehicles behind the first white line, whenever possible.

Drivers can also stop behind the second one, if necessary once the light goes yellow.

So I guess you’re supposed to stop behind the white line, but if for some reason you can’t do that in time, then you can stop before the crosswalk without anything bad happening.

Shell Road Train Tracks – Scan

The train tracks in this case have their own signal. It is always a wise idea to scan train tracks before driving over them.

However, often the lights and bars are not activated. In that case, you would normally scan, and then simply make sure if you’re stopping, that you don’t stop on the tracks or too close to the tracks.

Motor Vehicle Act

FYI, the motor vehicle act says that red means stop, and continues to say that if the red light is located at an intersection, a driver may then turn right as long as it’s safe and legal (no turning restriction sign.)

It also says a driver may then turn left if turning onto a one way street, and it’s safe and legal.

I stopped at a red, located at an intersection for a big store that had closed many hours previously, so the lot was empty and so was the usually busy road ( it was very late). So I went through (after looking both ways!) and Nope, lights came on and there the cop was, right next to the intersection. I explained I had checked the roads and that being so empty, it only made sense to treat the light as a stop-sign. No, no she was mad. Said it was “The dumbest thing she’d ever heard” and continued to verbally insult me, and tell me about people who died. Sooo, yeah they don’t really care for us to make independent decisions.

    • Yeah Red light at an intersection is Illegal to go through. Wait for the green. If the light is at somewere else without an intersection, then you can use your discretion, After you stop of course. If they want you to treat it like a 4-way Stop, then they’ll put a 4-way stop there.

I can’t read into that explanation where it states you may go after stopping at a red light when the light is still red where there is no intersection. It states where one must stop but no mention of going through a red light after stopping.

    • Keep in mind this is written in legal writing and written many moons ago. Did you notice for the intersection one it says that you must stay stopped until a traffic device tells you that you may go. But for the non-intersection it simply said stop and wait for the pedestrian.

Sorry, I just don’t see the part where it could be interpreted that one may proceed after stopping at a red light where there is no intersection, allow the pedestrian to safely cross and then proceed through the red light not waiting for it to change to green.

“(5) When a red light is exhibited at a place other than an intersection by a traffic control signal,

        (a) the driver of a vehicle approaching the signal must cause it to stop before entering the nearest marked crosswalk in the vicinity of the signal, or if there is no marked crosswalk, before reaching the signal, and

        (b) a pedestrian may proceed across the roadway.”

“In this case, red means Stop, yield to pedestrians, and then go. Did I just say that you can drive through a red light (after you stop)? Yes, yes I did.”

I find that interesting because I saw that mentioned on the news somewhere but can’t find any mention of it in the BC motor vehicle act and every cop I’ve asked say they’d ticket that. Do you happen to you where it’s written that you can drive through a red light after stopping at a Pedestrian-controlled traffic light? Thanks!
